Can someone help me date a photo please!
« on: Tuesday 15 August 06 00:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Yesterday was like all my birthdays had come at once-i was finally able to get my grubby little mitts on a photo album that was given as a gift in 1882.....it's a little worse for wear now as it's well travelled  and been scribbled on in places  but is full of gorgeous pictures....however,only three of them have names on..Now that i have finally calmed down and dried my eyes  i have scanned one  of the pictures that i am particularly interested in and am hoping that someone might be able to help me date it or tell me a little more about it.It was taken in Scotland if that helps....?In an ideal world someone would be able to claim it as theirs too and help me name the rest!!Thanks in anticipation...

All the trainee daters are around somewhere ;D Me being one of them.So i would at a guess say about 1790 :-\ I don't really think you can go by dress with older people though because even now they get stuck in a fashion warp ;D so might be nearer 1810

Erm - it's a photograph, ..... and commercial photography did not take off until mid 1850s or so.  It has to be later than that.

William Thomson, photographer, is shown on the 1881 census at 259 George Street in Aberdeen.  He was 45 at the time, so presumably had opened his studio a few years before this.

I would say mid-late 1870s, judging by the pose and the style of card.  :)

If a photo is a carte de visite (which most of these older photos are) then it dates from after 1861.  That should give the trainees something to work with  :) :) :)

Hi everybody,
Thanks for your help- i especially liked the colours!
I had no idea at all and did'nt realise that photo's  were'nt even  commercialised  until the 1850's.
The lady i had in mind died in 1897 aged 100 but i can't make up my mind whether this one is too young for it to be her??

I'm not very good at guessing so I'd say it's 1870s-1890s
