help please
« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 09:20 BST (UK) »
Hi I need help if anyone has a minute spare.

I have Mary Ann Nicholson born 1862 in Bragate or Rotherham, its different depending on the census return.

She married Robert Coultard b1861 in Crowle.

I'm trying to find her birth details and parents can anyone help at all?

Unfortunately there are several possibilities for Mary Ann on the 1871 census - birthplaces given as Sheffield, Dewsbury, Bradford and Leeds - so without her father's name, there's no way of picking the right one.

It looks as if you'll have to get hold of her marriage cert for her father's name:

Marriages Dec 1881
BRANT   Frances
COULTHARD   Robert
DRINKALL   Robert John
NICHOLSON   Mary Ann
Thorne 9c 1051

Sorry not to be more help!

Hi  Nuttyred and Rambler  :)

Not at all a certainty, but there is a Mary Ann of the right age, born Yorkshire and living at Crowle, Lincs...

1871
RG10/4728 54 30
Crowle, Lincolnshire

George Nicholson, head, 66, Tailor*, b. York Thorn Levels
Mary, wife, 63, Lodging House Keeper*, b. Lincoln Crowle
Mary Ann, granddau, 9, b. Yorks Masboro
+ 3 (male and widowed) lodgers

*The Lodging House Keeper could relate to George instead of Mary (=Tailor + Lodging House Keeper) - not 100% sure.

Tanja   :)

They don't have children living with them in 1861. In 1851, already at Crowle, they have a son Joseph age 7.

This could be her, living in Crowle adds up.......as she married Robert in Crowle, still it's not 100%
Nearly all that side of my family are from Crowle.

They were in Crowle in 1841 as well:

HO107/631/18
George Nicholson, tailor, 35+, b i c
Mary N, 30+, b i c
George N, 10, son, b i c
Jess N, 8, son, b i c

By 1861 George jun had crossed into Yorkshire:

RG9/3525 Thorne
George N, 30, ag lab, b Crowle
Mary Ann, 24, b Thorne
Mary S, 3, b Thorne
William H, 2m, b Thorne

These could turn out to be Mary Ann's parents

The Joseph mentioned above was a servent to a farmer in Eastoft in 1871 (RG9/3526).
