Hi Rhys - thanks for the Price connection. I had noted the 1861 census where Charlotte is noted as the general servant, but not the 1871 one where she is a niece. I'll also follow up the marriage lead.

Thanks Meliora - the birthplaces of the children in relation to the places of residences on the censuses is confusing. They obviously moved around a fair bit

Hello, Chris,

re. the places of birth for the Phelps children.

Are you thinking of the places of birth given in the 1961 census  i e   Rumney ?

I noticed that there is a distict of Rumney in Cardiff so I checked the enumerator's schedule for the 1861 census.
RG9/4002  folio 32  page 7

The heading is

Superintendent's Registration District...Abergavenny
Registrar's subdistrict...Tredegar
the schedule lists the places including Club Row in Rumney.

Further checks revealed that the Parish name is Bedwelty & the town is Rumney.

In trying to clarify this I have probably confused you even more.

re.  the places of registration for the children's births, Abegavenny & Monmouth are adjoining registration districts.

Meliora

Hi Meliora - we live in Cardiff, and I can confirm that there is a suburb (probably a separate village in the 1800's) of the city called Rumney, probably a corruption of Rhymney which was at the head of the Rhymney Valley, very close to Tredegar which was at the top of the adjoining Sirhowy Valley. The earlier census returns show the Phelps family as living in Uchlawrcoed which forms part of the eastern side of Rhymney.

It seems likely that Henry Phelps married Margaret Price, and we think that we have now established an Ann Price (her mum ?) living with an Isaac Price (her unmarried brother ?) in earlier censuses. Thanks for your help so far.

Chris.
