Thomas SCOTT Allington parish lookup please
« on: Thursday 17 August 06 09:41 BST (UK) »
Hello, could someone please do a look-up for the marriage of Thomas Scott to Sarah (unknown) in East Allington about 1801. On IGI Thomas has a record (of the iffy variety submitted by a member!!) stating that he was born about 1776 Allington & married a Sarah in 1801 East Allington. There are genuine records for all their children on IGI (John 1802, Elizabeth 1803, Thomas 1806, Sarah 1809, William 1813 & Henry 1817) all East Allington.

I would like to know if his marriage date is correct & what was Sarah's maiden name. If I'm not being too cheeky, I'd also like to find out if the date supplied for Thomas's birth is acurate too.

Any info would be great, thank you.

There are no East Allington marriages on the IGI.  The record that you've found seems to be of the "a year before the first child and he was aged 25" variety.  If someone had found the marriage, I'm sure they would have put the date as well not just the year, wouldn't they?.

The IGI has East Allington births from 1591 onwards and the children you mention were the only SCOTTs christened there, so it's likely that Thomas was from elsewhere.

Henry was buried there 30 Oct 1859 age 42, but I can't see obvious burials for Tom and Sarah.

Remember too that Allington is only a mile or two from the boundary with Notts.

Thanks for that Geoff. I know it was a long shot, hoping that the "submitted" entry for Thomas might be a good starting point but if all East Allington births are on IGI then you must be right in assuming he wasn't born there. I hadn't realised that East Allington was so close to the Notts boarder. I'll broaden the net a bit but he could still be from Lincs I suppose. Thanks too for the info on Henry's burial.

I wonder if you have considered this marriage listed in phillimores :-

Sedgebrook 8 Sept 1801
Thomas Scott and Vep Collins

An unusual first name to say the least :) Could be she adopted something more commonplace after marriage? Worth a thought anyway given it's closeness to Allington and the date.

Hmmmm ...

there are a couple of other Collins marriages in the area

Mary Collins and William Hardy 1799 Sedgebrook
Dorothy Collins and Thomas South West Allington 1804

There is a Dorothy Collins baptised at Fulbeck in 1785 (IGI) to David and Ann/Hannah. Amongst her siblings are Mary and Versula

Or am I pushing the boundaries of believability too far?  ;D

I'd want to change my name to Sarah if it was Vep! So I suppose it's a possibility this could be the marriage but if she hated her name so much why didn't she change it before her marriage?

Clutching at straws I know :)

I forgot to say that I have searched the Notts FHS index of marriages for 1780-1802 and there is nothig showing there either - although it isn't complete.

Hi

This could be a long shot as it has been so long, but I also have Thomas and Sarah as my ancestors. Did you have any luck finding out more about them? How are you related to them?

Regards

Jim Scott
