Intriguing to say the least!
No1 photy has a distinctive archway(?)to the right, could do with an extension to lower left, something there looks curious,on the road.Thought of a Canal Boat at first glance,'til man on road came up!
Could be anywhere, but that 'edifice' may help a bit.
No2,the steep roof and high chimney stack, said heavy snow and a need for a good draught for the fireplace's,and that's all I can say.
Hopefully they will tickle someone's memory!

Might be one of dozens of places in south east Wales.

Could very well be a view around Cross Keys, Monmouthshire. Looking south, the mountains look very similar. Plus there is a canal that runs along a road there, too.

Shall have a look at Google Earth to see if I can reproduce the view.

Hello Goggy,

My mind is racing after your comment about 'Rooters' not being a suitable word to use ... but this isn't the place for explanations !!   I'll just not use it again if its dodgy to Ozzies !!

I'm going to go to Cross Keys sometime in the next few months, and see if I can find where the picture was taken.

Here's an old postcard I found, showing a view of Crosskeys...it's from a closer perspective, but it looks very similar to the view in your pic.

Prue M ... you are a genius !
I'm really getting more and more certain my picture must be Cross Keys ... but I still can't think what relavence XKeys has to my family ... and no-one yet has any idea about the other picture of the cottage.  And why did the photo's get to Canada ?  Family history has so many questions ... and isn't it great when you get an answer  -and even answers to questions you haven't yet asked !
(Let's drop the 'rooters' thing, shall we ???  I'm embarrassed, even if I don't know why !)

PS ... isn't that site of old photos wonderful ?
