Parish register puzzle
« on: Friday 18 August 06 17:32 BST (UK) »
At a recent visit to the Borthwick Institute, I found on microfilm a baptism of Abiah PAULL at Bilton in Ainsty in 1823. What I was actually looking for was the baptism of Abiah POWELL. I'm certain this is the same person but I'm puzzled because the IGI has the correct spelling (ie Abiah POWELL), the baptism date being the same as the microfilm. Does anyone have any idea how the IGI managed to get it right, even though the actual parish register has misspelled it, please?

Who submitted it?
Maybe an individual 'corrected' the entry, when it was transcribed.

Thank you for the quick reply, Pauline. The source of the IGI entry seems to be Bishop's Transcripts and, as far as I remember, I found the entry at the Borthwick on the actual parish records. Maybe then it was 'corrected' in 1823 by someone in the parish who knew the Powell family!
