Charlotte STRAIT
« on: Tuesday 22 August 06 12:02 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on Charlotte Strait born Stone house Plymouth 1853/54. She married Giles Bird (born Bristol 1847) and was in Cardiff for the 1881 census.
I have tried many ways to trace her but have failed. If anyone out there can help I would be very grateful.

Hi Jenx,

Welcome to Rootschat  8)

I can't see her at first sight either, but what I see is:

Marriage September 1870 Cardiff
Elias Giles Bird - Charlotte Steer

Elias/Ellis Giles seems to be his name all right from what I see on census. What about the name Steer - are you 100% positive it should be Strait?

Another problem is that the one matching Giles Bird I see in 1871 has a wife Mary Jane age 18 b. Plymouth :P

Tati hello - that was quick.
Ellis/Elias Giles was, I think. Giles brother and no I'm not 100% certain of the name Strait BUT it does appear as Strait on Giles b/cert

How confusing.

There aren't many Elias Giles' around so I suppose the marriage must be him.

Do you have access to census?
In 1871, Giles is a lodger, a fireman and his wife is down as Mary Jane.
I can't see a Charlotte Steer (or Strait for that matter) born ca. 1854 Plymouth but I do see a Mary Jane Steer age 7 in 1861, born and living East Stonehouse. I agree this is quite far from your original search...

Have checked complete BMD to see whether she was Mary Jane Charlotte or something, but she wasn't: Mary Jane Steer, March 1854 E Stonehouse.

What a mess!!

Thanks again Tati. As you say most confusing. I'm going to have to have a think about this.
I.ve not seen the 1871 census where Giles is a lodger in Cardiff.
When you go to the 1881 census he is given as head of household and his wife is called Charlotte.
Regards
Lesley

Yes - she is Charlotte in both 1881 and 1891 - as well as on the marriage cert. She also dies as Charlotte Bird (Jun 1898 age 44 Cardiff 11a 178)
