1851/1861 Census Look-up - SHERRY
« on: Tuesday 22 August 06 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hello All

Hoping another pair of eyes will confirm what I've found or find another possibility.

William Augustus Sherry was baptised 30 June 1822 St James Church Paddington.

I think I've found him on the 1841 census just as William without a surname at 1 Vere Street (HO107 piece 676 bk 1f olio 20 pg 32) but then I've got a problem.

Is this him in 1851? The Ancestry search result lists a William Sherry with a wife Charlotte at 39 Gloucester Street, Finsbury (HO107 piece 1513 folio 104 pg 24) but I'm sure the enumerator has him written down as Shury on the census sheet.

Is this him in 1861? This time Ancestry search results show William and Charlotte Shury at Perry Mill, Lewisham (RG9 piece417 folio 111 pg 22). By this time they have a son Charles with them aged 9.

I haven't found a death for William Sherry between 1841 and 1851, and there isn't a marriage for William Sherry with a Charlotte but there is one for William Shury.

If this isn't him and his family, has anyone got any other possible sightings?

Thanks in advance

Dawn

hello
I'd just like to say the rest of the family ,his parents John and Sophia are at Hatton st Marylebone 1841 and 1851.
And there is a possible death of a William Sherry child at Marylebone 29 .1.1823 .Although a 7 month old would hardly be a child ,more of a baby.
And other children all at Paddington -Anne Caroline 30.6.1822,John 21.8.1825,John William 5.7.1829 Evelina 13.10.1832
I'll carry on looking.

Hi all

Thanks for your replies.

William Augustus did die as a young child. So much more is online now.

In the intervening years, I have tracked them all down, birth, marriages and deaths.

For MrsSollo

Sherry is more frequently occurring in the indexes than you would think. The surname supposedly derives from something like Court McSherry in County Cork. Our twig and branch comes from Dublin though.

Would love to go back prior to 1792 but the records don't exist online (yet). It's not for the want of trying and DNA tests.
