Can anyone help?
« on: Wednesday 23 August 06 22:23 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Thomas Da(e)venport was born in 1829 in Clifton Lancashire. Problem is there are 2 Cliftons in Lancashire - one near Preston and the other near Manchester.
I am about to plan a trip to England to search the parish records for information about Thomas but I need to sought out where the records are kept and when the office is open. But first I need to establish which Clifton I need.

Using online resources the Clifton in Eccles near Manchester seems most likely as there are many Davenports in and around Radcliffe which I believe is adjacent to Eccles!

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance

Hi Nederland

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you found your ancestor in all the available census (back to 1841) ???

If not, then do post some details from the census or something for him and his family and somebody will take a look for you.  The earlier years might give some idea of which one it is likely to be.

When/where did he marry ???

Best wishes

Thankk you all for your interest

I have traced Thomas Da(e)venport back to 1861 Census for Liverpool (RG.9/2651).
Unfortunately I can not find him on the 1841 nor the 1851 census returns. I do know that he was a sailor and have unconfirmed evidance that he served on board S.S. Stromboli - this may account for his disappearance.

His first wife Jane Cook came from Much Woolton and all of their children where born in Woolton. Thomas married Jane in August 1851 at the church of St. Nicholas in Liverpool - the sailors church at the pier head I believe. Jane died somewhere between 1861 and 1869 as Thomas remarried in 1869 to a Rebecca Hutton from Bedford. I have found 2 of his children Jane and Eliza living in 1871 with Jane Cooks sister in Much Woolton.

I hope this will help. Thankks again.
