coat of arms
« on: Wednesday 03 November 04 11:35 GMT (UK) »
I am totally new to all this and not very good on the old computer to make matters worse. However, i was just wondering how do you get the coat of arms in place that some people have beside their names?

Many thanks

Some people have their own images showing, others have used the coat of arms pictures in the profile. If you go into your profile (click your name on the left of the screen) you will be able to change your settings from there.

If this is not what you mean, then click this link it may help you:

Hello Ginger,
If you cannot find the particular Surname listed then I am more than willing to see if I can locate one for you .
It will be for a particular person and not the surname in general.I will explain in more detail if you require .
Cheers

Hi,

Where to start... Well firstly there are not Coats of Arms for particular surnames . They are for individuals. For a name like Briggs there are likely to be more than one issued. I have found reference to EIGHT over the years.
I have also found a life Peer that was created in1976.
Unfortunately the 1980 copy of Burkes Peerage I have does not have a Coat of Arms illustrated. The illustrations are also lacking from the other references I have. (Armorial Families)
There are however a number of CRESTS used on the various Coats of Arms ... Crests are the emblems over the helmet on a full Coat of Arms.   Most of the Coats of Arms you find on line for sale will not have the Crest displayed.

I understand that you are looking for something to display on this forum.   May I suggest that you try a search of the internet via google  and if you find one let me know and I will see if I can identify it to the individual .

The Life Baron created in 1976 was Asa BRIGGS from Yorks . He was in Education . Vice chancellor Sussex Univ
1961-76   Chancellor of the Open Univ. and Provost of Worcester Coll Oxford.

Your  library may have a more recent edition of Burkes and there may now be Arms included.

If you are interested in the Crests (emblems) used then I have some examples of those along with some mottoes
but I do not have an illustrated Coat of Arms at this time.
I have verbal descriptions but creating an illustration from the description is I fear something I just do not have time for.
Hope this helps to some extent. Heraldry is as much , if not more ,  of a minefield as genealogy.  ::)
Best wishes  Gj..
