Watkins family - Newport
« on: Friday 25 August 06 14:55 BST (UK) »
Further to earlier posts I have now found out that Edward Watkins was born in Newport in 1869/1870.  He married Selina Sandford on 1st July 1984 at St Mark's Parish Church Newport.  On the marriage certificate his father is listed as James Watkins, Haulier.  On the 1901 census Edward states he was born in Newport.  However, I cannot find any trace of him on census returns between his birth and 1901.  I feel as if I'm going round in circles and would extremely grateful for any assistance.

Hello
How sure are you of his birth year?
Should the marriage date be 1894 rather than 1884?
The only Edward i can find born Newport with a father James was born c 1865. Edward was a Masons labourer in1891 as was your Edward in 1901. In 1991 his father James was a Haulier  in Newport, though in 1871 and 1881 he was a labourer.

Thanks Rhys.  We both seem to have had a problem with our 1800's and 1900''s  :).  Of course it should read 1894 for the marriage.  I took his birth date from his marriage certificate when his age is recorded as 25.  As Selina was only 19 I wonder if a bit of poetic licence was used!  It may well be the same family.
