Missing Stricklands
« on: Saturday 26 August 06 18:48 BST (UK) »
Hi
Can anyone help me find my missing Stricklands from Manchester. The first census I can find them on is 1881 when they were in Sheffield
Head John b 1832 m Elizabeth Calvert in Manchester Cathedral 1853.They lived in Mount St Ancoats.First offspring I've found was my Gt Gt Grandfather John George b1858.I'm sure there must have been more before then but I cant find them. Two other known children were born in Lancashire Elizabeth 1865 and Sarah A 1870in Newton. David b1871 was born in Sheffield as were all the others Job 1873 Eliza 1877 Mary Ann 1875.
Can anyone help find them before 1881
Thank You
Audrey

Can you help by clarifying (using GRO indexes) when exactly Sarah A and david were born, and so confirm birthplace?.
It'll help to know which to look for on 1871 census.

Hi Pauline
David Strickland was born Dec Qtr 1871 ref 9c424 Sheffield
Sarah is a mystery. On the 1891 census married to Frank Cooper she gives Birthplace as Newton Lancashire but the only GRO reference around this date is June 1870 9c483 Sheffield.
I think this might have confused rather than clarified but thank you for taking the time to look into this

The closest I can see in 1861 RG9 2873/94 Page 19 cont 94 Page 20 is this, Thirza Street, Openshaw

John SHACKLETON, Head, Mar, 28, Labourer born Lancashire Manchester
Elizabeth SHACKLETON, Wife, Mar, 27? born Lancashire Manchester
John G SHACKLETON, Son, 3 born Lancashire Manchester
Margaret SHACKLETON, Dau, 10m born Lancashire Droylesden

The ennumerator seems to have written Shackleton but he could have made an error if he couldn't read the handwriting on their census return.  If you can find the corresponding births on freebmd or ancestry for the baptisms that Rambler found it may help to clarify.

Hi Jean and Rambler
Thank you for this information.I'll search Bmd's for these new names and the census is probably them also, there was a family rumour that at one time they were called Strickleton which is easily corrupted to Shackleton.
I'm always amazed how much help I receive on this site.Thankyou all of you
Best wishes

Hi Audrey

It could be Strickleton - definitely finishes with ton but first part difficult to read.  I can imagine it would be transcribed as Shackleton.
