If you go to Calderdale Council's Weaver to Web site at

http://www.calderdale.gov.uk/wtw/

and use the SEARCH facility to search for SMITH you can see the drawings of Joseph Rideal Smith [1837-1915].  Just browse down the thumbnails and you'll see the drawing with the White Swan.  The reference number will be useful if you wnt to go along and see the real thing in Halifax Archives.

Incidentally, the Weaver to Web people lifted large chunks of text from my Calderdale Companion without any credit!

I just took a look at the Weaver to Web site.  Great!

But I still miss your Calderdale Companion site, Malcolm.  Is there any chance at all of you putting it back on-line?

Today I purchased, at a car boot in Cambridgeshire, a property transfer indenture dated 1780.  It deals with the transfer of property 'opposite to over against an Inn thereknown or distinguished by the name or sign of the White Swan'.

Can anybody tell me, does the White Swan still exist?  Does it still have property 'opposite to over and against' which could be from the date of the indenture?  Is there a local history society I could contact for more details?

Regards

KA

Did you ever find it? I've got a picture here with the building opposite shown. It's crown Street and it was there in 1868

The early pub was demolished in 1858, and no longer exists
The hotel known as the White Swan is now near the site of the original.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
