help on finding an unmarked grave
« on: Monday 28 August 06 07:18 BST (UK) »
My Grandmother, Kate Davies, died in 1934 and is buried in St Marys Builth in an unmarked grave. The family would lke to find the grave.
The unsuccessful steps we have taken so far are
Contacted the church  -  unable to help
Contacted the undertakers  - unable to help
Spoken to someone from the FHS  - unable to help
Old contacts in Builth  - unable to help
Everyone has been willing to help just that they have been unable to provide the information we require.

I am now going to arrange for an ad to appear in the local paper.

But is there anything I haven't thought of  - If there is please post a reply

Owen

Moderator Comment: If anybody can help, then please check out the thread on the Radnorshire Board as well, to avoid duplication of efforts. Thanks :)

Who did you contact at the Church ?
The Churchwardens are the ones to write to I think.

It may be that this Churchyard as it is a town is now a closed churchyeard in which case it will be maintained by the locao authority, either the Builth Town Council or Powys County Council.
Try the TOwn Council first

I agree Owen contact the local authority, I have one unmarked, the man from the local authority told me this, when I explained that I would like to go he sent someone out and placed a marker for me and posted me a map of the cemetery which was a great help.

Good luck

Thanks to all for your helpful suggestions. We have now reached the end of the  road and have accepted that, short of exhuming the grave and reading the plate on the coffin, we are not able to pinpoint the exact grave that she is buried in.

The family is putting a commemarative bench in the churchyard with the kind permission of the vicar so in a fashion we have achieved what we set out to do which was to put a stone on her grave.

Just thought I would let you know what happened.

Hi Owen

Thanks for letting us know.

You can now move on to the next mystery, the commemorative bench is a great idea,
