Wasn't sure which board to put this on....................

I’ve hit an interesting problem………….Birth registered in Malta !!!

Thomas H Jackson born between 1870 – 1872 – British subject

Father – James Jackson (born approx 1837) – born Bedfordshire (General Labourer)

Mother – Mary A [don’t know her maiden name] (born approx 1839) – born Cambridgeshire

How do I go about ordering up the Birth Certificate for Thomas H Jackson on GRO ? Born in Malta. All my previous certificates ordered have obviously been straight forward English or Welsh ones !!

Do I need an exact year ?

Can anyone offer some ideas on this ?

Is there maybe a Malta website or something similar for British Subjects ?

Many thanks.

Hi SCH

Is the birth on the Overseas Index of the GRO? You can check via www.1837online.com but it is pay to view, perhaps SKS has a few spare credits?

If it is then it's really easy and can be done online.  Here's the link for the GRO "How to order overseas certificates"

HI there

Have found your Thomas H Jackson birth on the 1837 regimental indexes page 5 of 5.

It says

Thomas H Jackson place Malta, year 1871, regiment 52nd.

Haven't got a clue how you order it though  ::)

Perhaps if you log on to http://www.1837online.com/OrderCertificate.jsp
there might be some advice somewhere- or you could always email or ring them.

Good luck- let us know how you get on.

Hope this helps

Thank you to you both for taking the time to think this issue through ! Much appreciated indeed.

Carol8353.............what is this about 'Regimental Indexes' - pages 5 of 5 ??? And Regiment 52nd ?!?!?

Any thoughts at all ?

I have (so you all know) - sent an e-mail to the GRO (yesterday) - so will update once I get a response fom them.

Also, I'm on Ancestry, so might they have the same Birth info ? Sorry to be a bit think, I generally just stick to the simple things on that site..........a Malta Birth is a completely new one for me !

Thanks

SCH

Those are the references I found him under when I looked him up on the overseas births on the 1837 site for you.

I presume that is what you need to quote to order his birth cert.

The 52nd Regiment must be what his dad was serving with at the time?

I very much doubt the overseas births are on Ancestry. If they were they'd make you pay loads more to view them  ::)

carol8353 - many thanks.

The 1891 Census shows the Father (James Jackson) - as a General Labourer aged approx 54..........but obviously no mention of any previous employment history.

He was born in (I think if I'm reading it correctly ?) Sundon near Luton in Bedfordshire.............so quite possible he might have been in a local Regiment.

His wife (Mary A), was born about 1839 in North Cambridgeshire.

I need their marriage cert I think, don't I ?

This one will run and run.............

HI again

I have just found them in Portsea in 1881 too.

James Jackson 44 general labourer b Sundon Beds
Mary A Jackson wife 41 b Chatham Kent
William E Fagg son 16 general labourer b Aldershot Hants
Joseph R Fagg son 14      "               "          "              "
Thomas H Jackson 9 son Scholar B Malta
Robert J Jackson 7 son scholar b Gibraltar

The gap in ages between the 1st and last 2 boys, suggests this may have been a 2nd marriage for mum. Also the places of births-even for her point to them being a very naval family!

Why don't you post a request on the Armed Forces board asking if anyone can enlighten you as to what the 52nd regiment was and what was it doing in Malta in 1871  ;)

Once you get Thomas's birth cert you'll get mums maiden name.

I'll see if I can find a marriage between a Fagg and Jackson .

Hope this helps
