BECKETT - Wentworth County, Ontario
« on: Monday 28 August 06 17:34 BST (UK) »
Today I think I have found the death of the brother of my 2xggrandfather in Barton Township, Wentworth County, Canada.

He was born in Cheshire, England in 1802 and married Ann Garner in Manchester, England in 1830. Their children were:
Frederick 1831
Henry c1832
Charles c1835
Samuel c1847

They were still in Manchester, England in 1851 (HO107 2232/134 Page 14) but I can't find any of them in 1861. I think I can see Henry senior aged 68 in the Ontario index for 1871.
Henry senior died in 1884, his wife in 1894 and Henry junior in 1914.

My questions are:
1. Can I get more information on the Ontario 1871 census
2. Is there an earlier census for the area eg 1861
3. I believe Henry junior married Anne THOMPSTONE, possibly in Canada, will I be able to find marriage details and see if they had children?
4. What other census information is available, and what information will I be able to find?

I'm completely new to Canadian research, so please bear with me if I'm asking the impossible!

Jean

Hi JD,

1st. Question

Yes, you can get more information on the 1871. It will have everyone in the household on it.

If you want I can look it up next time I'm at the library for you.

2nd. Question

Yes, there is the 1861 and 1851 census available. They are not indexed though.

Gandley (but known as Stanley in Canada)- Ireland to Birmingham
Ball, Kempson & Franklin - Birmingham
Shorter - Surrey
Dyer - Devon
Dawkins - Co. Cork, Ireland
Heffernan - Ireland
Huck - Alsace, France
Reinhart - Baden, Germany
Bowman & Ellis - England
Etheridge - Gloucestershire

Who all came to Canada in a little row boat, clap clap, clap your hands!!

The 1881 also can help with more names for Henry jr's (& Anna E.) children
Henry L- 1868 , Alice M- 1873, Edward T - 1875, May H1877 & Alfred - 1880
You can also see that Henry Sr. & his wife Anne are in the same household

Edward's middle name ( mistranscribed ?) as thompston / birth reg.:

On the 1901 Alice M. is down as Maria A. and there is a Samuel
( both Henrys are down as Henery :P) see split view above for more info!

Anne's date of immigration says 1866...Henry's says 1854...so he should be on 1861!

follow the links later to see the family on the 1911...May H. living with elderly parents...fellows off on their own...Maria likely married...no wait...she died a spinster, right...? Yes, that was the M. Alice above...

here's a wonderful site...where you can find plenty of information on your family!
( and their businesses in Hamilton harbour!!!) I guess farming paid off well, and
the boys were industrious!
Henry Sr. and his 3 sons Henry and Samuel & Frederick Garner also mentioned often
search: Beckett for many results, then the url links to the actual story lines...
