1841 Occupations
« on: Tuesday 29 August 06 14:54 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of a key to the occupations in the 1841 census?  Most of my ancestors have C.H.L.W. under this heading.  Some I can figure out - F.S. = female servant maybe?  This one has me stumped.  Example attached.

Thanks, Lori

Wow!  That was fast!  I should have guessed since I now look at my records and see Handloom weaver in the 1851 census....  :P

Thank you for your quick response.  Lori

Hi Lori
Saw your query re census occuptional abbreviations
If you looked them up on scotlandspeople look at the top of the image and there should be a button which allows you to look at the front pages of the census book.  This gives details of exactly the area that book covers and should also give some of the instructions each enumerator was given about the abbreviations he should use for occupations.  If you purchased the image you can go back and read this extra detail.
Its fascinating as well as informative.
