Occupation Gardener - adding detail
« on: Thursday 04 November 04 08:07 GMT (UK) »
My g.g. Grandad was a gardener by trade in Eccles Lancashire.  I have traced his relatives etc but would love to add some more detail to the list of names I now have. Does anyone know anything about gardeners? He's listed as a journeyman which suggests an apprenticeship so I thought maybe there might be a way of tracing where he worked/trained? Or is a gardener just a euphemism for labourer and therefore a bit untraceable? Any thoughts/suggestions/help gratefully received!
Cheetham in Eccles, Lancashire. Roxburgh in Galston, Ayrshire. Lindsay in GlenIsla, Dundee and Newcastle

just a thought:  is there an ND next to Gardener ?

there was a topic on this : http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=15010.0  discussing some of the possibilities for gardeners. That might help a bit with background info.

Journeyman implies "for hire" and yes, as you say, an apprenticeship.

try "apprentice gardener" in Google (22,400 hits !)

Good luck !
