In Memory of
Private G WILSHAW

6711, 18th Bn., Lancashire Fusiliers

who died
on 01 June 1918

Remembered with honour

Martinsart British Cemetery

Martinsart is a small village 4 kilometres north of Albert. The cemetery is on the south side of the village on the road (D129) to Aveluy. The cemetery is signposted in the centre of Martinsart.

Martinsart was close to the Allied front line until September 1916, and again from March to August 1918. Martinsart British Cemetery was begun at the end of June 1916, when 14 men of the 13th Royal Irish Rifles, killed by a shell, were buried in what is now Plot I, Row A. It was used as a front-line cemetery until October 1916 and again in September 1918, when bodies were brought in from the battlefields for burial by V Corps. After the Armistice, the cemetery was enlarged when more graves were brought in from the area north, east and south of the village. There are now 488 First World War servicemen buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 155 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate six casualties believed to be buried among them. The cemetery is unusual in that the graves are marked by stones made from red Corsehill or Locharbriggs sandstone, rather than the more usual Portland stone.

There are 68 Lancashire Fusiliers buried there ....... you may be able to get a photo of the gravestone if you get in touch with British War Memorial Project – A volunteer based organisation photographing the war graves and individual memorials to every service person from WW1 to present day. The team of 500 volunteers is growing weekly and the project has now over 100,000 images of graves that are  available to genealogists, families and anyone else interested in finding a war grave of a known casualty. All for free!! it holds hundreds of war grave photographs from all around the world - give it a try Fiona ...... you would have something to treasure .... !!

Thank you so much Annie.  It was very kind of you to find this info for me and to point me in the right direction.

My Granddad visited Martinstart many times to lay flowers for his Dad, that he barely knew.  He never took photos as I don't think he owned a camera at this time.  He also didn't document any of his findings whilst trying to find all his other siblings who were also placed in orphanages after George died.  So this is a labour of love to find out all I can about his Dad.

Grandad applied to the war office (in the 50's) for George's medals and received them, he then traced his eldest brother Stanley and thought that he should have them, as he was the eldest - Stanley sold them  :'(  It breaks your heart  :'(

Anyway, thanks again Annie, the info is brilliant and will take pride of place in the Wilshaw family book  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the advice and the explanation Harribobs, does subscription mean a monetary contribution?  If so, I know the family were very poor so it would never have happened.

Mack, thanks for the advice- I'll check it out next week as I'm planning a visit to Manchester Library, as I'm freeeeeeee, little one starts infants school  :-* :'( ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Many thanks again

Thanks again Mack, I have a couple of Josephs but living in Staffordshire.

There is a clan of Wilshaws living in Ashton, I've become quite friendlily with one family but so far I haven't found any connections.

Maybe one day when I have surplus pennies and time on my hands (hmmm could take a while) I'll be able to take a trip to the National Archives - I won't hold my breath though  ;) ::)
