Matty,

I would love to talk to you.  There are not many Culbert families that were in County Donegal.  I know of three and we believe that they all connect.  My line comes from Balleighan, Manorcunningham, County Donegal, Ireland.  The most common names in our family are: James, Matthew, Andrew, John, Robert, Jane, Margaret, Elizabeth and Catherine.

I can talk to you about the Culberts of County Donegal as well as put you in contact with those from the other lines.  Do you have any further information about your Catherine?  Do you have any estimation of when she lived?

I have a suspicion that your Catherine was the daughter of Andrew Culbert and Susan McClean.  Perhaps with your help I can prove or disprove it.

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks again, I have now looked at what little information  I have on Catherine Culbert.  If you can connect Catherine with your Culberts I would be delighted and of course pass on all the information on her Granchildren etc.

I look forward to talking to you soon.

Matty,

I'm afraid that your Catherine lived too long ago to be Andrew's daughter.  Andrew would have been born in the first decade of the 1800s.  Let me tell you a little about what I know.

Andrew Culbert was from Balleighan, he married Susan McClean in 1848.  He was one of at least six children of James and Elizabeth Park Culbert.  All of his siblings emigrated from Ireland except his sister, Catherine, who married Susan's brother, Robert McClean.  Andrew's family was the last Culbert family in the area of Manorcunningham.  The only family before Andrew's in that area was his father's, James Culbert in the Flax Seed List.  Before James, the only Culbert found in that area is Mathew Culbert.  Mathew is found on the Poll of Electors in 1761.  We believe Mathew was James' father.  Not only was he the only Culbert found in that area before James, but James named his eldest son Mathew.

Dunfanaghy is found in the Kilmacrenan Barony across Loch Swilly from Balleighan.  There is a Samuel Culbert Sr. and Jr. listed as living in Kilmacranen in the Flax Seed List.  Andrew's son, Mathew (yeah, I know it's confusing), was the only one of Andrew's children to have children of his own, and he converted to Catholism and settled in Carrownasaul near Kilmacrenan in the later part of the 19th century.  The family of James Culbert and Elizabeth Park were Presbyterian.

There are actually very few Culberts found in County Donegal during that time.. to the point where it's almost not a matter of if they are connected, but how.

Some more specific dates for the births of Mathew and Mary Coll Culberts children.  These dates were taken from birth registries in Dublin and I find that they are usually a few days off.

Robert Culbert b. 27 Oct 1883 - immigrated to the US and died in between 1912 and 1920.

James Culbert (1) b. 14 May 1885 d. 31 Mar 1886

Samuel John Culbert b. 26 Sep 1886 d. 26 Dec 1970 - immigrated to the US.

Andrew Culbert b. 18 Mar 1888 d. ca 1917 - immigrated to the US.  As I understand it, he died in a mining accident in Colorado.  This may just be family lore. His widow would later marry his brother.

Susan Culbert b. 16 Apr 1890 - Immigrated to the US.

Mathew Gerald Culbert b. 12 Oct 1891 d. Feb 1977 - immigrated to the US.

Mary Culbert b. 16 Sep 1893 - immigrated to the US and then later moved back to Ireland.

Margaret Culbert b. 05 May 1896

Catherine Culbert b. 17 June 1898 d. Dec 1996 - She immigrated to Wales.

James Culbert b. 25 Sep 1900 d. 1972 - He changed his name to Culbertson and thus was the last Culbert from his great grandfather's line to live in Ireland (as far as we know).
