Hi Elle2

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

Perhaps you could post the 1861 census details, plus the info from the marriage cert, which will help us to help you.

Does the cert give an occupation for Thomas, or does it say he is is deceased?  Have you traced Emma's family and the witnesses to the marriage?

Let us know as much as you can and we will try to help.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I think Llandyssil is actually in Cardiganshire, but it's not far from Llangeler which is in Carmarthenshire, so how about this family
1861 Pontwelly, Llangeler RG9/4180 folio 5 pg 3
Thomas Richards head mar 51 carpenter b. Llangeler
Jane wife 51 Cardiganshire, Llandyssil
Anne dau 23 b. Llangeler
John son 11 scholar b. Llangeler

1851 Pontweli HO107/2482 folio 277 pg 24
Thomas Richards head mar 40 carpenter
Jane wife 41 b. Carms, St Peter
Elizabeth dau 16
Anne dau 13 scholar
Daniel son 11 scholar
Mary dau 9
Margaret dau 7
David son 4
John son 1
all apart from Jane born Llangeler. Last but one house in village, next to gatekeeper's house.

thank you for your reply on the marriage cert it has Thomas as a Joiner Emma was the daughter of George Parkhouse of Devon her first marriage was Pengelly as I said I have all that information it is John is the blockage I have his occupation shown as Puddler (Tin)
the witnesses on the cert show as Margaret Evans and looks like Jenkin Thomas.John was a widower and I think his first wife was called Ann??also of Aberavon.I am sorry to be so vague ,but that is the only information I have as all the older members of the family are deceased.John is my Gt.Granfather

thank you Osprey it could well be the family but there is no sure way of knowing is there, The information for Carmarthenshire was from the Ancestry site showing Llandyssil as place of birth and that is all I had to go on.But they are not always correct with thier facts as I have found on other research.I have been back to 1600's on the other side of my family but have acomplete blackage on John

it's not Ancestry making the mistake here as it says Llandyssil, Carms on the census image, so you have to assume that is what John told the enumerator. Looking at a map, I think Llangeler and Llandyssil are probably less than 5 miles apart and at that time, Llandyssil was the bigger place. Joiner and carpenter are a pretty good match I'd say.

Do you have John's first marriage or his birth? There are plenty of siblings to find baptisms or births for to help confirm his parents.

I am sorry I didnt mean Llandyssil was a mistake what I meant was whether it was in Carmarthenshire or Cardiganshire not knowing the area (I was born in Port Talbot) I unfortnately have no other information on John but it does look as though the Llangeler family could be a possibility I will look in to it further Thank you
