Look up request LEWIS please
« on: Saturday 02 September 06 15:31 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to start off tracing my mother in laws family, having successfully 'done' the father in laws !
However.......
I can't seem to get started at all  :(

All I know is that the family were called Lewis and lived originally in the Glaisdale area and later the Eskdaleside area.

My m-i-laws father was called William Lewis, born 1891 ish !!! and he married Elizabeth Wilson who already had a son called Ted. I think William had two aunties called Hannah and Annie ?

I was told William and Elizabeth ( Libby ) were married about 1916 but I have trawled the BMD around that date ( and beyond ) and I can't find anything  ???

William was 15 years older than Libby and I know they had two other children, Joan and Ken.

In past weak moments I have called on the help of rootschatters - can you help me get started ? I would really appreciate it.

Mary :)

Hi Mary

Found a Joan Lewis mother's maiden name Wilson b Q2 1916 in Sculcoates district

There is a marriage between a William G J Lewis & a Ms Wilson in Sculcoates in Q2 1914 but I cannot find the linking entry to give me Ms Wilson's name which is a bit odd  :-\

Any chance Libby was married before?

Hi Mary

There is also a Mary E Wilson + William Lewis marriage in Whitby in Q4 1914 but I've not found any children from that marriage yet.

Hi Sandra

I know it all happened definitely in the Whitby area so am guessing that your second post is nearer the mark especially as Joan was born in the 1920s.
So it would appear that William and Libby married earlier that I thought - I checked every quarter from 1916 to 1921 - should have gone earlier methinks  :P

Have you managed to find anything on the census records ? I've looked but failed. I think everything is earlier than I thought as Libby had a seven year old son when she married and William was 15 years older than her. By my reckoning he must have been about 36 which would make his birth year well before 1891 ?

Thanks
Mary ;D

Hi Trevor

What years are these please ?

I know that William worked for the railway and brought up his family at Eskdaleside which is between Grosmont and Sleights. Tate Hill and Bog Hall are firmly in the centre of Whitby.

Isn't it funny that he and his family are proving so elusive ! I believe he died around about 1956 - you would think I would be able to at least find him with his mum and dad ?! ???

My M-i-Law has lost his marriage lines and he didn't really speak much about his family I'm told.

I was told that the family were brought up in Glaisdale End and his mother died when he was young ( no dad ) and he was brought up by his Gparents ( also Lewis ) - it's a mystery !!

Thanks
Mary :)

Thanks Trevor

Unfortunately I don't think it can be him as the dates would mean he was 31 in 1914 and as he was 15 yrs older than Libby that would make her 16yrs which is impossible as she had a 7 yr old son when she married  :P

Thanks for your interest - if you find anything else please let me know as at the moment I have a big fat zero !!!!! ;D
