Hi Roy,

My father, Evan Douglas Wilson, was born in 1896 & died in 1957.
He was in the RNR in WW1, & I assume that he gained some medals for that service.
I know that he served on the SS"John Sanderson," Chatham from 1912 - 1916, & I believe that he was wounded in the Battle of Jutland.

However, I have very little to go on, - (he died when we were all young) & I've been unable to find a Medal Card for him on the National Archives site.

There's no one alive to ask, & so I'm trying to piece things together by myself.

Cheers, Romilly.

Hi Romilly,

I am hoping for really good things from this post for you  :D

Have you tried to apply for any details regarding his service from the RN?  I was wondering if you thought he may have had a pension ???

Hi Wendi,

Nice to hear from you!

No, I don't think that my father had a pension from the RNR. According to my mother, his death was very unexpected, as his lung cancer advanced very rapidly. My mother was never told that he actually had cancer, & had very young children at the time, (my younger sister was 8months old when he died). I know that we were very poor after his death, (my mother was left with 4 girls under 10 to bring up on her own) & if there had been any pension, it would have made a huge difference to us. I know that it was a real struggle for my mother & although she managed to feed & clothe us, we never had holidays, etc...

I am trying to piece together my father's WW1 record myself, as unfortunately there is no-one left alive to ask.

Thanks for your interest,
Romilly.

Hi Kev,

Many thanks for that, - I paid & downloaded, but unfortunately it wasn't my father. (This E Wilson was in the RFR, not the RNR, & my father was Evan Douglas Wilson).

Funnily enough his next of kin was a Margaret Wilson, -(the name of my father's mother) but this family were from Liverpool, not Swansea.

Sounds as though this E Wilson was a naughty boy, because he was deprived of his I G.C Badge in 1918, - offence not stated in Ledger!!

If anyone would like the details, I will willingly pass them on!

Cheers, Romilly.

Thats a shame, two of the medals should be the british war medal and the victory medal, but i dont know why he doesn't have a medal card.

Hi,
You said a while back that he was probably wounded at Jutland. This could be an avenue worth pursuing.
There is a published Jutland Roll of Honour of killed and wounded, see here for example http://www.fhindexes.co.uk/jutland.htm
I don't know where you might consult a copy though.

If the story's true, he would have been on one of the ships listed here:
http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/jutland/jellicoe_dispatch_1916.htm
Unfortunately though, this site listed only those killed.

Neil
