Hi again Kev,

I have a letter dated 1922 from the Admiralty to my father saying that he qualified for these medals.
He was also mentioned in dispatches for bravery, but I don't have that letter, - I believe that my sister in New Zealnd has it.

The uniform in the pic I have posted is that of a Lieutenant, I believe...but my late Uncle told me that my father left the RNR as a Commander. I have no proof of this though...

Thanks for trying Kev, - much appreciated.
Romilly.

Hi Romilly  ;D

I've just spoken to The Data Protection Cell at HMNB Portsmouth, who assure me that a copy of his Naval Record "will be" at The National Archives, and it should be recorded under his name - not necessarily online.

This is a link to the Research Guide for RN Officers' Service Records

I know themonsstar on here does military research at TNA, but not sure if he just specialises in Army, it might be worth a PM to him.  Here's his profile page

Hi Wendi,

Many thanks for the Link, - much appreciated.

I've emailed themonsstar re Kew, - but think that I will have to make a trek over there once term starts!

Has anyone on here had a go at researching Naval records there? (Just wondered how straightforward it is...I've never been before).

Romilly.

The Times, Saturday, Mar 04, 1916; pg. 10; Issue 41106; col A
The London Gazette. Friday, March 3., Admiralty, Feb. 29.
Royal Naval Reserve - to be temp. midshipmen, R.G. McCall, E.D. Wilson (Feb 27)

That's the only entry in The Times I can find.  However, it might still be helpful, as the NA research guide indicates that the Executive Officers: Service Records are indexed by date someone became a Midshipman.

Sorry Jorose,

Meant to ask...did you find that entry via Ancestry?

This is the link for the Royal Navy Reserve service records information leaflet detailing available service records/medal rolls etc. at Kew ..............

You should be able to find his midshipman appointment in the London Gazette archive online:

No, I have access to The Times via Cambridgshire libraries.  I don't have an Ancestry subscription, too poor. ;)
