Thomas Stanger Gamekeeper
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 02:41 BST (UK) »
Hello I am trying to track down the death of Thomas Stanger, Gamekeeper who was living with his wife Jane aka Jenny in Aythorpe Roding Essex in 1901. There were several children alive at the time.
However family lore states that Thomas was shot by a visitor to the estate they worked on and killed. I am lead to believe the estate was owned by the Earl of Wharncliffe but THIS COULD BE WRONG. I would be grateful for any information as to the name of the estate the owner and the validity of the shooting incident. I cannot find a death for Thomas Stanger.
Any help would be appreciated. Incidentally Jane would be my Great  great Aunt. I may have posted this before elsewhere but if I did I apologise.

I have looked through the death index from 1901 - 1911. There are few Strangers, it is an unusual name.

The only death of a Thomas Stranger is OND qtr 1907, aged 81 in Sevenoaks Kent ref 2a 419.

You do not give an age for your Thomas, so I dont know if this could be yours.

If not, then it seems your Thomas did not meet his untimely end till after 1911, so should turn up hale and hearty on the 1911 census in a few years time.

I will continue looking from 1911 onwards. He must have died sometime. In my experience 'family lore' should not be taken too seriously - it usually has some truth in it but when you check it out there is often some major discrepancy - like it was actually his father who was shot, not him!

modified later - now looked to end of 1917 - no more Thomas's at all

Google doesnt produce a direct link of The Earl of W -  to Roding, but there are streetnames in the area called Wharncliff etc etc..

His 'likeness' can be viewed here ...

It seems to be a Yorkshire family tho ?

The family name is Montagu-Stuart-Wortley-etc etc ! Some info here -  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/fedocs.asp?FER=F5701

and Google will reveal even more - other than a link to Essex !

OK
So, looked again 1901 - 1911 for Thomas STANGER. There are a few Thomas deaths, but none in Essex.

Maybe he was only briefly at Aythorpe Roding, and had moved elsewhere when the shooting happened?

There is a Thomas Capps STANGER listed on GRO Index.
in West Ham Essex b1884 d1910 aged 26 (Apr-Jun 4a71).
Could this be the one ?

Thank you all for trying to help. Another thought has just occurred to me. It was indeed the Montigue- Stuart Wortley family but the head of the family at that time was Lord Milton. He had a tendency to name places after himself. Is there anywhere called Milton in your area?
