Thomas OWENS
« on: Wednesday 06 September 06 15:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am just posting this in the faint hope that somebody may have this person in their searches, from 1920's I have his details, marriage, families, death. I am searching for his origins, I know he was born in 1890 but not actual date and also that he lived 'at the foot of Snowdon'. His father's name was also Thomas and occupation was plate layer on the railway. I have several birth certificates for the above name from the area of Snowdonia born 1890 but would love to confirm which one is his!
If anyone could help breakdown this brickwall I would be grateful.

Hi Chubbler, The only one I could find was on 1901 in Penrhydeudraeth, Merionethshire at 5, Tynyfowd Terrace;
Thomas Owens age 53 born Mochdre Denbighshire occ; plate layer
Jane age 49 wife born Penrhyn Dth
Willam P age 18      ditto  occ; plate layer
Mary age 14            ditto
Thomas P age 10     ditto

Cant find them before ,will look again unless anyone else spots them.

Hi ems girl
Thanks for taking time to reply. This is one of the certificates I have and I think it is a strong contender as the only information given by Thomas is on his marriage cert and that is his fathers name and occupation and these both tie in. I can't find another family with same names and occupation. Sadly surviving relative cannot remember his birth date and is not convinced this is he as he feels strongly the father was into farming. Not knowing the area I cant comment but I thought there was a railway being laid at that time. However I cannot trace his date of birth, having tried various including writing to the Hospital where he died (they had been destroyed due to time passed). He died in 1968 so cert only shows age.
I guess I may never know and will just have to assume.
Many thanks,
Chubbler

Thomas and family can be found in Penrhyndeudraeth in the 1891 Census too

RG12: 4644; Folio 119; Page 21

Tyn y Ffrwd, Llanfihangel y traethau (this is the parish that includes most of Penrhyndeudraeth)
Thomas Owen head 44 Quarryman born Mochdre Denbighshire
Jane Owen Wife 39 born Penrhyn Merioneth
Richard Owen Son 12 ditto
Wm Owen Son 8 ditto
Mary Owen Dau 4 months ditto
THOMAS OWEN son 10 ditto
Ellen Pugh Sister in Law and visitor 50 Single born Penrhyn

Given that Thomas is still 10 in the 1901 Census and that Mary is 14 by then I suspect that the "months" should belong to Thomas and not her. As the census was taken on 5th April 1891, that would suggest that Thomas was born in May / June 1890.

The unmarried sister in law has the surname Pugh. This suggests that Mrs Owen(s) may also have been a maiden Pugh.

With all this information the Ardudwy district registrar should be able to give you an exact date and place of birth.

I had a look at the 1881 census and from it I think that I may have been rash in my assumption that Jane could have been a Miss Pugh before she married. She may have been MRS Pugh, and Ellen in 1891 may have been a "sister in law" because she was the late MR Pugh's sister (on the other hand Dorethea may have been illegitimate):

Bro Heulog Llanfihangel  y traethau, RG11/5549 Folio 42 Page 28

Thomas OWEN Head 24 (sic) Plate Layer Mochdre, Denbigh,
Jane OWEN   Wife Female 28   Penrhyndaedraeth
Dorothea PUGH Daur 8 Scholar do
Richard OWEN Son 2 do
Jane OWEN Daur 1 month do

Thank you very much Dolgellau for all this information.
I shall indeed contact the Ardudwy District Registrar and see if I can get the date and place of birth.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi cuckoo,
No, I'm sorry it's not the same Thomas Owens, mine was married to a Jane Pugh. Good Luck with your searching, its a very popular name!
