I should have mentioned there are few lunatics in those forums so take any advice with a pinch of salt.

I just read that someone had NIS and Zonealarm Pro running at the same time and wondered why his computer was going slowly.

Er ... do you need two firewalls running at once?

He then announced that once he had uninstalled NIS, his PC speeded up.

No surpises there then.  :)

Take care

Doubt its a harddrive problem if you've successfully reformatted etc ..

BUT of course it could still be a missing 'fix' from Microsoft - what was the answer to 'Auto-updates' ?

also consider this - how much memory is installed Geraldine ?

If its DDR memory, and you have over 256Meg, there will be 2 boards, try swapping them around - or actually, leave one out and reboot and try shutdown again - if it fixes it, you've got a memory problem.

If it doesnt -  swap to the other board and try again.

Make sure that power is totally off and dont wear nylon clothes to avoid static.

Sorry - you may not feel happy about pulling and swapping those boards .... its actually quite straightforward, they are about 3 inches long on one side of the motherboard, but there may be ribbon cables in the way - so take care ... and make sure power is off 'at the wall'

they have built-in levers to help remove them, but are tight to replace, so dont 'push' any pins !

If you arent comfortable leave it and we can explore more s/w related symptoms - I just want to eliminate this as a possibilty ... especially as you still have the problem after a refresh of XP.

Kind regards, S

Hi gcar

Out of interest what was running at 100%?

Was a particular process running at a high level or was it a combination of processes?

Take a look at this link to see if you can solve the shutdown problem:

Good luck
