Gamekeepers
« on: Thursday 07 September 06 14:30 BST (UK) »
Someone recently put me on to the fact that Gamekeepers had to be licensed. Does anyone know where I would find information on an index of Licensed GK's for Berkshire? I found an address on the Berkshire
Family History site but it is from 2002 so am concerned it is out of date. Also does anyone know what information this might tell me?? Any suggestions welcomed....

Just a quick update, I did in the end contact the lady I found on the Berkshire FHS site re-Gamekeepers. For the cost of a SAE and cheque for £3 She sent me back a list of all the Gamekeepers in England she had for the name I was interested in. This gives dates, the Landowners they worked for, which estate they worked on and the source of the reference. Her letter also advised me of further contacts which might have more records. It turns out my chap may have been employed by the Crown Estate in Windsor Great Park and if I contact Windsor Castle Archives they may know more.... :) :) Heres the link (just scroll down the page) with her details for anyone with Gamekeeper interests, it is not only Berkshire she has catalogued. http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/journal/Dec2002/TheBulletin%20-%20Dec2002.htm

Hi JK

Many thanks for the information - I have a family of gamekeepers to follow up - father & his son seems to have inherited the job!

Re Windsor great park - I had a ggg uncle who was a groom there for 50 years. One of my cousins wrote to Windsor Palace & received a wonderful reply from an archivist there - quite an amount of detail, including when he started, when he was promoted & details of his funeral and burial. Definitely worth a letter.

Sorry - this is a bit off topic - but wondered if you knew if Gamekeepers in Southern Ireland (early 1900's) had to be registered as well?.. just thought I'd ask, if you don't know I'll post on Ireland board.  Thank you.
