Stalag XVIII
« on: Friday 08 September 06 07:40 BST (UK) »
I have this ID tag that I dug up in the grounds of the now vanished Garden House Hotel (Folkestone, Kent, UK). I am reliably informed that it might belong to J.H. McKenzie, 26249, Pte,  2NZEF, from New Zealand. Can anybody assist as I'd like to reunite it with his family.

I sent this to the compiler of Stalag prisoner lists : "My parents owned a hotel (pulled down last year) in Folkestone, Kent, which was occupied during the war by the RCASC. I found a number of letters and bits and pieces in the loft and a dog-tag in the garden. I understand that the hotel was used at the end of the war as a transit point for troops returning from Europe. I put a couple of ads in Canadan Legion magazine in Montreal many years ago, but got no relevant replies and have hung on to the tag ever since. How can I track down the probable "owner" or his surviving family?"

Any other ideas?

Moderator Comment: If anybody can help, then please check out the thread on the Armed Forces Board as well, to avoid duplication of efforts. Thanks :)

A very interesting find.

The organisation representing returned servicemen here is The NZ Returned Servicemen's Ass. They have a contact link at their website http://www.rsa.org.nz/index.html

The owner might still be alive and a member. If not the RSA is better placed than most organisations to know which part of our country he came from thereby enabling them to place ads in the local media for relatives.
Living in Christchurch, New Zealand.
