Can't find my Great Grandmother
« on: Friday 05 November 04 11:08 GMT (UK) »
Can someone advise as to how I can find a lost grandmother. All I know about mine is that her marriage certificate and all the census say that she was born in Ireland. The dates are all different, within two or three years as well.

Her name is ALMA MARY ELIZABETH BOND, b abt 1852+/-. Her marriage certifcate [1874, Mexborough, to TOM ROBINSON] says that her father was GEORGE BOND and that he was a soldier.

Alma must have gone to a school of nursing, as she
became a Midwife, working in Mexborough and also in Stalybridge, Cheshire.

She was alive in the early/mid 1920s, as my late father remembered her as a buxom woman with a strong Irish accent.

I'd appreciate any advice

Shalom

Hi Phyllis,

Which branch of the Christian faith was followed by Alma & Tom ?
Alice's birthplace was probably one of the towns in Ireland which had a large army barracks. That limits the area to be searched by a small degree. A search for the regiments in Ireland around the time of Alice's birth and a search for George Bond's military records might enable you to make more progress.

The two sites below may help you. It is possible that George's wife did not live with him in army accommodation at the barracks but lived elsewhere in the town near the barracks. If this might be the case I would expect Griffiths to show her name as head of the household
