Perhaps it would be beneficial to obtain the marriage cert for George/Catherine to see if there is clues to the ages/address.  The family are not at Garden St, Merthyr in 1881, nor with the Grahams.

In 1861 there is a George Dix in Merthyr with Parents, father Samuel is a fruiter all born Glos, maybe a possibility.

Arran, if you get anymore clues keep us posted.  This is bugging me, tried everything, cannot find them, still looking.....love a mystery, but love helping to solving it more

Arran

Do you think there could possibly be a connection between the missing Frederick and George Dix and the only other family with the surname in Merthyr in 1891.....namely Samuel and Maria Dix?

A large family, they also have a son Fred but he is accountable in the 1901.  Is it purely coincidence that they are the only other Dix family in the area?  Samuel states his birthplace as Bristol on the 1891 but that changes to Merthyr in 1901.

And, who is the George Dix who shows up in Merthyr in the 1901.
RG13/5025  15  21    Age 52, born Bristol, married to Sarah 31, and with son SAMUEL age 3??   Putting George's details into the census collection search box as they appear in the 1901 gives one result.....yes, the 1901!!

Quite a puzzle!!

Hi Pritch

Thanks for taking the trouble to look and yes, the two families certainly warrant comparison to see if they overlap at all.

Thanks for pointing this out, I will investigate further!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi again

I received this message from my friend, who has now got the certificates.

Have not done any further investigating myself yet:

Quote
Here's the latest....

George DIX and Catherine GRAHAM were married on 21-10-1872 in Merthyr register office. He was 24, bachelor, Provision dealer, resident Pontmorlais?, father - Samuel DIX, Publican.
She was 25, spinster (but we know she was widowed because it says 'formerly GOUGH on 1875 birth cert of Fred), resident Pontmorlais, father John GRAHAM, Hawker.
Witnesses Hester (Esther) DIX (George's mum) and James Griffiths.

Using Samuel DIX b.c1825 to search on I found the family in 1851 (St George, Bristol, where the older children including George (b.1849) were born) with George age 2, 1861 (Merthyr, Samuel's occ. Fruiterer) with George age 13. Nothing in 1871.  Samuel (licensed victualler) in 1881 with younger children but no wife (died in 1877 Merthyr), and 1891 as an old man occ. cab proprietor (died 1892 Merthyr). However, still no sign of George or his son Fred (b.1875) between 1861 and 1901 when Fred is newly married to Mary Jane.

Fred DIX and Mary Janes marriage cert (1900) confirms Fred's age - 26, father George, cab Proprietor (family business). The witnesses are William Lawrence and Mary Hanies (Harries?) - no relations.

Off we go again!

;)

This has to be an outside chance - note that there are HAWKINS step-children in the 1851 household.

1871 census RG10; Piece: 5360; Folio: 53; Page: 4;

George HAWKINS half-brother U [ age illegible, given as 11] - labourer - Glos Bristol

In the household of Henry CHANDLER mason & wife Martha, 11 Gough St, Cardiff St Mary

Looking for Samuel's marriage to Esther/ Hester to check her maiden name.

Feel free to chip in!!  ;D

Looks as though they might have married young:

Marriage

Jun q 1845 Keynsham, Gloucestershire

Samuel DIX

Hester HAWKINS

Vol 11 Page 145

This probably discounts an earlier marriage for H/ Esther, so I am less happy with the CHANDLER connection.  Help!

Chandlers look like a red herring:

Marriage

Sep q 1860

Bristol

Martha Rosina BAKER

Henry Thomas CHANDLER
