On 6 April, 1807, Charles Hayter married Jane Burdon.

Charles was later involved in the Swing Riots and transported to Australia.

I would be interested to know Jane's place of birth so would like to know if she is listed on any census which might offer a hint. There were children William c1807, Sarah c1810, Charles c1816 and Anne c1818.

:) Hi Elizabeth, Found Charles Hayter Junior in Downton in 1841  with wife Emma but no  Charles Senior.  There is a Charles Hayter in 1841 though but nowhere near Downton. Some others but not born earlier enough to have been getting married in 1807. Could be a new wife and child?

Hi Elizabeth

You don't say where the marriage took place, but the only one I have found is in Downton.

Jane Hayter does not appear in the 1851.

You need to hope that somebody has access to the Downton parish register or look it up yourself.   It is possible that the marriage record will state 'of this parish', or state an alternative parish.   It seems probable that Jane was born in Downton, you can confirm or deny this from the register.

Regards

Colin

Thank you, Cheryl and Colin.

The marriage in Downton is the one of note, but the register does not suggest that either the bride or groom is from another locale. Charles baptism is in the register but no Burdon or Burden christenings appear in the register from 1758 until Jane and Charles marry. In 1824 and 1826 Ann and Henry Burden have two children who are christened there. I'll post a lookup request for Henry to see if that offers a clue.

Thank you again.

Beth

Hi Beth

I see your problem.

Burden is quite a common name.   There nearly 300 hundred entries in the 1851 census and not one born in Downton.

I am sure you must have seen the two Jane Burdens in the IGI, neither of which seems convincing.   I wonder if you have come across Jane born 21 March 1779 in Donhead St. Andrew with parents Stephen and Hannah.   Donhead is about 15 miles from Downton.
