Help with some place names please
« on: Monday 11 September 06 04:30 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have found an entry in the Ancestry.com census records for 1861 and 1871 and think that the place of birth is incorrectly spelt in the transcription.

A Mary Beavan in the 1861 English census showing her place of birth Breddoe, Radnorshire, Wales
and then
Ann Price in the 1871 Welsh census showing her place of birth Wheredern, Radnorshire, Wales.

I Think that these two are sisters, but cannot locate either Breddoe or Wheredern. I have searched Gazetteers, old maps, multimap.com, Genuki, LDS.

I can't find anything close to the names and without the correct spelling I am getting nowhere. ::)

Mary's husband Samuel was shown as born in Glascoom and I was able to locate that as Glascwm/Glascombe, but no luck on the other two.

Any suggestions ???

I looked at the census images.
What they transcribed as Wheredern, is actually Aberedw.(South Radnorshire)
For the other name, Breddoe is actually what's written on the census page. That's probably also Aberedw.

Thanks kmo

I would never have got that in a thousand years. Obviously the Welsh accent must have had quite a part to play, coupled with the fact that perhaps the Beavans could not read or write?
