Silver threepenny bits got replaced between 1937 and 1945. But I'd say it was much older. I've got an old silver cigarette case of some ancestor or other with similar design.

What were your grandmother's dates - sensible ones now Barbara  ::)

Barbara - the stamps on these cases were often inside - have you had a good look there?

Ada (nee Lamb) Wallwork, born 1903 died 1968.    I've no idea where she got if from, or how long she had it.  Mum (thinks she ) remembers her having it when she was young.

I can't open it, unfortunately, that's one of the reasons I want to take it somewhere to be looked at.

Nice one Barbara (and your mum)!  Isn't it great what they come up with - my mum is still going through her mum's stuff and occasionally the odd "treasure" pops up (nothing silver though!)

One question - is it silver or plate?  Only I can see what looks like rust on the back...I know of a very good way of cleaning tarnished silver, but I wouldn't recommend it if this is not silver, or if it's stuck shut (the treatment involves immersion in water and you wouldn't want it seeping inside).

Goggy, if you think I'm asking her if you can go through her drawers . . . .. .  whoa!!    ;)

Prue, it must be silver plate as there is a bit of rust on it, don't know what I can do with it, and I still can't get inside   :-\

Silver can also become very tarnished - try a bit of toothpaste and an old tooth brush - brush with care though  :)
