Address in Hay-on-Wye
« on: Tuesday 12 September 06 10:58 BST (UK) »

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help me locate an address and Hay-on-Wye. My grandfather was born in 1917, on his birth certificate his parents' address was given as "The Gardens".

Any help appreciated...

If's it a substantial property then it may be individually named on www-old-maps.co.uk when you look at hay-on-wye.

The other is to try to find it's postcode (if it still exists) www.royalmail.com

Thanks for the ideas Pauline.

No look on old-maps.co.uk, there's one map for Hay (1888) which doesn't name any building.

But I did find an address at the royalmail which is on Castle Gardens, Forest Road.

Julie,

Thanks.

I'm hoping that someone fairly local to the area might be able to give me some info about the social standing of the people who lived in the The Gardens in around 1917. Without seeing the building I suppose it's diffcult to know but if they're described as a terrace that makes me think of the working class railway or mill terraces...

My Gt grandfather's occupation was "Hotel Porter" (noted in brackets under his army rank) on gradad's birth certificate but don't know whether there would have been a hotel in Hay that would have employed porters or perhaps he worked at a big hotel in Hereford or somewhere. It would be nice to understand  ???

Hello Mike,
I used to be local but that was many moons ago and i did'nt take much notice of such things in those days unfortunately.
You may have already spotted this but there is a website for Hay on Wye with a direct link to the tourist info' office.Maybe they could point you in the right direction if no one else can?Hope you manage to find something....Julie

Hello Mike,

I live in Hay-on-Wye, the Gardens are a small row of very small terraced houses off Heol-y-dwr.

I could take some photos and email them to you.

Email me off list,
Regards,
Ian.
