A really stupid question
« on: Tuesday 12 September 06 17:34 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

This is a really stupid question and probably one that I should have sorted out a long time ago, but here goes:

I have James Loveday, christened in Elmdon on 09/12/1798. His parents are James and Mary. There is a marriage of James Loveday and Mary Gates, 23/10/1794 in Elmdon and so I believe they are his parents.

I've looked through the christening records and can't see one in Elmdon for James Loveday (senior). What is the best thing to do now to find him???

I'd be very grateful for and thoughts.

Thanks very much in advance :)

Was James "of this parish" upon marriage to Mary?  If not, there may be a clue to his parish of origin.

Hi Anna,

Yes he was of the parish. But how long does someone need to be in a parish before they are counted as of the parish? Could he have moved there as a young man?

Yes, he could have moved there only a short time earlier - it just means that he was resident in the parish at the time of the marriage.

Hmmm... any neighbouring parishes that might be worthy of a lookup?

Edited: I see Harry has a candidate for you!

Hi Harry,

Thank you for finding that :)

Is the best way to see if he's my James, to look for him later in Chrishall? andif he's not there, then he went to Elmdon? (did that make sense???)

Caz,

Makes sense - actually Chrishall is the adjacent village - not much more than a mile away.   There is no other James LOVEDAY shown in the IGI born Essex 1770 +/- 10.

Caz,

As a matter of interest, I can't see James marrying in Chrishall in the time-frame.   Although both parishes have LOVEDAYs, Chrishall seems to have more going back over a longer period.

Good Hunting !
