Hi alli,

If you mean Maria Sawley I got her from an IGI individual record here:-

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0u8/

I was researching Rossiters from North Petherton and came up with a set of marriages, which I started to follow up so that I could reconstruct the family tree there.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

I think the marriage details came off the IGI:

Maria SAWLEY
Born  About 1829   Of North Petherton, Somerset
MARRIED: 04 Oct 50   North Petherton, Somerset
William ROSSITER
Born: 1825   Of  North Petherton, Somerset, England

3 things to note:
1) The record is SUBMITTED not EXTRACTED.
2) The Years of birth could be WAY WAY out - IGI has a habit of taking an event date (a marriage) then subtracting an average age of a groom (around 21-25) & bride (18-21)  to arrive at a possible DOB for them.  If the marrying couple were not "average" age, then this estimation is very misleading.
3) The "of North Petherton" birth does not neccesarily mean they were born in North Petherton. It means they were, at some stage, living in North Petherton where events were recorded (a BDM).

Cheers

Hi again

And the William & Maria ROSSITER family whom buttonmoon found in 1861 - that Maria ROSSITER at age 50, is quite young enough to have been the birth mother of Charlotte 11 William 8 and Honor 5 - born when Maria would have been aged btw 40 and 45 ish  ;D ;D (Spoken as 45 yr old myself with a 2 year old  ;D ;D)

In 1851, the same "quite old couple" are here  - and I think we can say the SEALEY children in the household are quite close to SAWLEY is sound.......And "Son-in-Law" was often used to mean "Step-SOn" . Certainly warrants a look at anyway!

1851: North Petherton, Somerset

Hi Ambly,

Many thanks for that. The age factor came in because there was a suggestion that she may have married a William Baker in 1841 when she would have been 12.

Like you I took the view that the Sealey children were Maria's children but I believed that they were from a previous marriage. Another possibility is that the children were illegitimate either by William or someone else and that William took responsibility for them when he married Maria.

I suppose the only way we will prove things one way or another is to either find a marriage between Maria Sawley and a Mr Sealey or find Maria with the children prior to the marriage in 1850 or find baptism records for William and Edmund Sealey which show who their parents were.

Just got your next message which beats me to it. Maria appears to have been born in 1816 so she could have had illegitimate children and married William Baker.

What do you think?

best wishes

Hi rcuser

This looks like William in 1841:

1841:  North Petherton  Somerset
Hundred: North Petherton
REF : HO107/953/9,  Folio: 24,  Page: 8
RD : Bridgwater   Sub-RD : North Petherton
ADDRESS: High Street
William ROSITER 35 Ag Lab - Y
Ellen ROSITER 30 - Y
John ROSSITER 2 - Y

A few doors back:
1841:  North Petherton  Somerset
Hundred: North Petherton
REF : HO107/953/9,  Folio: 24,  Page: 7
RD : Bridgwater   Sub-RD : North Petherton
ADDRESS: School Road?
James MEAD 45 Ag Lab - Y
Lucy MEAD 40 - Y
James MEAD 15 Shoem Ap - Y
William MEAD 10  Y
James ROSITER 70 - Ag Lab Y

FREEBMD had deaths of 2 Ellen ROS*ITER in RD: Bridgewater:
Dec Qtr 1847 Ellen ROSSITER
Mar Qtr 1849 Ellen Pigeon ROSSITER

I agree with you and think:
Very possible  that SEALEY in 1851 is a mis-heard, and should be SAWLEY.
Maria SAWLEY had sons William SAWLEY abt 1839 and Edmund SAWLEY abt 1841/42 either illigitimately or else she was married to a SAWLEY first.
She married William BAKER in 1841 - the boys may or may not be his.
William BAKER died sometime btw 1841 and 1851.

William ROSSITER married Ellen pre 1841
They had 2 children, John abt 1839 and ELiza abt 1847
Wife Ellen ROSSITER died 1847 to 1849 (in 1847 childbirth?)
Son John ROSSITER may also have died pre 1851
William  remarried widow Maria BAKER nee or formerly SAWYER in 1850 who had 2 boys.
Together they then had 3 children of their own (Charlotte, William & Honor)  to add to his surviving 1 (Eliza) and her 2, William and Edmund.

Noting that in 1841, Maria SAWYER appears to be in the household of George and Honor KERLE - and she named her Rossiter daughter Honor - a connection?

Cheers  ;D

Hi Ambly,

Just been re-reading the thread. Your scenario looks pretty good.

Just got a query about Edmund born 1842. If William Baker married Maria in 1841 why is Edmund recorded as Edmund sealey/Sawley in the 1851 Census. Surely by then he would be Edmund Baker?

What do you think?

Best wishes
