Thanks very much folks.

I must admit I thought it might be slaughter House but if as it seems it is perhaps Slater House it still gums up the search as the person I'm looking for should have been a Railway Porter so perhaps its back to searching and re-checking again.  ::)

For those of you kind people that took the time to help and asked questions I have attached a larger slice of the census. The location is Ardwick, in deepest Manchester and it is taken from: RG10/3978 folio 131 p 21. The guys name is Knowles.

I notice that with other occupations on the page the enumerator has put for example

Labourer and then qualified it with "Dye Works" or "Corporation"

So I still say it's Slater - House.

Yes I think your correct, the consensus certainly seems to point to him being a 'Slater'
