Married or unmarried?

In a census if the Head has a different surname than the Wife and she is described as unmarried, who's wife is she, if at all? Or is it just a slip of the pen?

Does it actually say wife in the relationship column?

It sounds as if she is still single but if you post the details, we'll have a look at it and may be able to give you a better explanation.

It does say Wife and looks like condition is 'Un'. Can't exacyly make out the Head's surname, but it isn't Stock which is the 'Wife's' surname . All the children are Stock also.
If you can look at 1851 census for Elizabeth Stock born 1811, Isle of Wight living in Middlesex. She's at the bottom of the page, the Head's surname has been transcribed by Ancestry as William Royer, but Royer is wrong, it looks like Swyer or similar.

I can see why you're confused!  My bet is that the enumerator made a mistake in putting "wife".  Elizabeth Stock is in the 1861 still listed as "unmarried", lodging now with a Joseph Grisley.  She has two young sons still living with her.

I agree with you about William's surname in the 1851 being Swyer.

Elizabeth seems to have been an uninhibited lady!  An illegitimate brood of that size wouldn't have gone down well in those days.

Have you seen the Parish Registers for any of the children?  It would be interesting to see if any fathers are named.  It could be that William Swyer and Joseph Grisley are the children's fathers, particularly in  young Joseph's case.

That we will be another trip to London next year. We've sent for young Joseph's BC, he seems to be the link for tracing my wife's Grisley past.
(That sounds terrible!). Joseph Grisley & Elizabeth Stock do marry later, which is why we think Joseph Stock took his stepfather's name.
