This is my theory - all names given are for showing the example only

Brides Grandad is "FRed" He married "Mary"

They have George then Fred dies in 1906 but Mary has a son John to some one else and puts Freds name on cert George and John are half brothers (same mother I think)

Still with me?

Right - George has a daughter Jane who meets up with John and they decide to marry.

John is therefore Jane's half uncle as well as husband.

But I suppose it is this only if George and John have the same mother.

Thomas, Williams,Owen (s),Griffith (s), Jones - Anglesey
Burns, Wallace - Northumberland, Ireland, Scotland
Horsburgh, Sandilands, Blackhall, Rankine, Rankin, Hilson, Nielson - Scotland
Turnbull, Mills, Burgoyne, Burgon - Northumberland,
Davidson - Scotland, India, Burma
Lopez - India, Burma
Thank you all for helping me to try to solve this problem,
details as I know are as follows

Grooms father deceased 1906, cert purchased
Groom born 1908 deceased mans name on cert but since found out father is grandfather of bride.

mother remarried 1910 to grandfather of bride, cert purchased

Brides grandfather then become sher father in law.

The bride and groom lived quite near to each other and wasn't aware of family connections till marriage

My family tree programme can't seem to solve this but thanks to all your suggestions it might now be resolved

Happy hunting

Hi Louisa

You family tree program can resolve this problem if you feed it the correct information.

You need to enter the fact that the child was born out of a spouseless relationship by an unknown father.

mother = single
father = unknown

downside
Sussex: Floate, West
Kent: Tuffee
Cheshire: Gradwell
Lancashire: Gradwell

I have tried so many variations of trees, I have tried putting in father shown on birth cert and the father who was silent at the time but married the mother 2 years later, I have tried up and down the trees, I am going dizzy.
I will try your suggestion to see what happens then.

Thank you

If I were to put a copy of this FT on rootschat I am sure it would make it clearer but I am not sure how to put attachments on.
