hi barry,

had another wee look at your family....looked for census details and came up with a surprise....

1851 census- fore street, johnshaven

roderick ross...age 56...weaver
margaret ross...dau...age 21...merchant grocer
roderick pert...grandson...age 2
elizabeth forsyth...sister-in-law...age 46...hemp spinner
alexander forsyth...age 21...weaver

all born cromarty.

i had a wee search for roderick's wife and it seems he married jean forsyth, all the way through the census elizabeth never changes her surname, does this mean the she was a single mum?

elizabeth is staying with roderick ross in the 1841 census also but no sign of alexander or any other siblings.

what i also found strange was there was no wife with alexander in the 61 & 71 census, had she died in childbirth?

1861 census- west end, johnshaven

alexander...age 31...sacking weaver
helen...age 4
john...age 3

1861 census- fore street, johnshaven

margaret riley(ross)...age 32...sailor's wife (wife of thomas)
john riley...age 5
mary riley...age 4
thomas riley...age 1
roderick ross...father..age 65...chelsea pensioner
elizabeth forsyth...aunt...age 55...hemp spinner

1871 census- west end, johnshaven

alexander...age 41...salmon fisher
helen...age 15...hemp spinner
john...age 13

elizabeth forsyth is still staying with her niece in fore street on the 1871 census aged 69. cannot find her after this.

now alexander remarries... he married susan beattie on the 8/10/1875 but i reckon his son william hutchison forsyth is born out of wedlock.

1881 census- front street, johnshaven

alexander...age 49...salmon fisher
susan...age 38
william...age 7
betsy...age 4
jessie ann...age 3

1881 census- 9 ferry street, montrose

john...age 24...boat builder
elizabeth...age 28
helen...age 11 months
james gouck...stepson...age 10
george gouck...stepson...age 8
mary gouck...stepdaughter...age 6

1881 census- 44a ferry street, montrose

thomas findlayson...age 30...grain merchant's labourer
helen...age 26
alexander...age 4
john...age 2
thomas...age 1 month

1891 census- 5 wallace street, dundee

john...age 33...boat builder
elizabeth...age 43
helen...age 10
margaret...age 9
samuel...age 7
joanne...age 5
george gouck...age 18...apprentice boat builder
mary gouck...age 16...factory weaver

1891 census- 102 caldrum street, dundee

alexander...age 61...jute yarn sorter
susan...age 48
betsy...age 14...jute piecer
jessie...age 13...jute shifter
alexander...age 9
james...age 8
robert...age 6

1901 census- 32 james street, dundee

susan...age 58
betsy...age 24...jute spinner
jessie...age 22...jute spinner
alexander...age 19...apprentice baker
robert...age 15...apprentice shater

i think that john has remarried by the 1901 census, can you confirm this?

Hi Joekar,

Thanks for the info. but don't know who the first lot are, possibly siblings of John Forsyth b.c.1798 Kilmuir Wester but can't find a connection, though the Alexander mentioned ca.1829 could be the nephew, couldn't find him on the 1851 census, is he shown as nephew in 1851? so can't answer the rest.

Found the various families you mention up to 1881 but didn't go past so that is news for me.
William Hutchinson was born 1873 so was out of wedlock and Alexander married 1854 and Helen & a daughter Mary Jane b.1859 are not on the 1861 census so assume had died about 1860 but didn't find a death.

Don't know about John being remarried by 1901 and it looks like Alexander had died by the 1901 census at Dundee as you show Susan 58 ?

The one that I followed through was Roderick and his son John Lownie.

Thanks for the rest,
Barry

Hi Beckey
Just to throw a bit of light on Alex Forsyth, born 10/5/1829 Ross & Cromarty.

He was married twice, first to Helen Stephen in Johnshaven  they had 3 children, Helen, 1855, John 1857 and Mary 1859.
After Helen died he married Susan Beattie in Johnshaven on 8th October 1875, their children are William 1873, Betsy 1876 Jessie 1878 and Alex 1881.  The family moved to Dundee to work in the jute mills.
Hope this helps  Jenc

Hi Jenc,
Thanks for the info, managed to get all that just wondering who that fist family was.
Could they be Alexander's aunts? the ages fit with being his fathers sisters.

Hi Beckey
I think it's very possible these are Alexander's aunts. Tried on IGI but haven't come up with anything so far. I have Alex's siblings, if you haven't already got them.  His parents John Forsyth and Mary Bain were married in Cromarty 20/06/1828, and his sibllings are: Duncan 29/05/1831, Elizabeth 15/04/1834, John 31/01/1836 Margaret 23/01/1839 and Roderick 01/05/1843.  Alex's second wife Susan Beattie was my gt gt aunt.

Hi Jenc,
Thank you got them, my wife's gt aunt connects with Roderick's side in a marriage Forsyth/Wait in Berwickshire.

Looks like I will have to get a 1851 census to see what relation they all were to the head
