Robert NEWLAND - can anyone read this?
« on: Monday 18 September 06 09:45 BST (UK) »
Dear All

I'm having trouble identifying where Robert Newland was born.  I can't read what the census says, and also can't find the 'Parwell' that the transcriber suggests.  Robert is transcribed as 'Sichert' so obviously the original was difficult to read.  Multimap doesn't list any appropriate Parwells.

This is taken from the 1851 census for Luton, Robert is 41 years old, and a schoolmaster.  He died in 1856 so won't be in any later censuses.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to where his birthplace might be?

thanks!

KN

The county is Hampshire.
WWW.old-maps.co.uk suggests a few places in the gazzetteer.
Amongst them all "Purewell" is a suggestion.

thankyou so much for your speedy and useful response.  I had failed to see the Hants in the over-written note - it's so obvious now!  And I was no-where near to the possible Purewell.

Another pair of eyes is always so helpful!
