Anybody know anything about this photo?
« on: Monday 18 September 06 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been given this photo from my mother-in-law, which was brought over from Ireland by her grandmother.  She doesn't know anything about it, and hadn't noticed the words 'The execution' on it.  I'm sure it must be staged, as the man with the noose around his neck doesn't look too bothered.  The others look rather menacing like.  I did notice many of them have guns, and as my mother-in-law's father was in the army, and met her grandmother while training in Tipperary, Ireland, I wondered if it could have been his company messing about.

I also wondered if it had anything to do with the Easter Rising, as her grandmother had five or six brothers.

Any ideas would be helpful

Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

It would appear that you have a photo that was taken prior to an hanging.
The man at the back has his legs tied together and a rope around his neck.

Hi Rosemary

Having taken a closer look, it could have been taken in South Africa during the Boar War. If it is a genuine photo of a hanging, then the man could have been a deserter. The men in the lighter clothes are not regular soldiers, more like malitia.

I thought the man on the left looked quite Irish, maybe because of the hat.  I can't see anybody taking a photo like this, if it was a genuine hanging, and keeping it for all to see.

It seemed strange that my mother-in-law's grandmother, who it belonged to, would keep it, and not explain to her children etc what was going on, and who was in the photo.  She was strict catholic, that's why I wondered if it had anything to do with the troubles in Ireland.  They had militia there as well didn't they?  Perhaps her brothers were members.

It doesn't bear thinking about really.  I hope it was staged for the man's sake

It wouldn't be a scene from an early film, would it? It looks vaguely reminiscent of the sort of lynchings you might find in a silent epic like "Birth of a Nation". Maybe there was a moral message which was considered worthy of remembering. The words "The Execution" look almost like the name of a scene in a silent movie.
Just an idea, Fred

You could be right Fred, or an amateur dramatic company on location.

Thanks for the replies anyway

I wonder what the man, knelt at the front of the photo is holding, it must be significant?  Also, what is he wearing?

A very odd photo, I hope you get to the bottom of it  ???

Hmmm.  Not unless anybody has the same photo, with an explanation - or an expert in unusual photos!!!

Oh well - it was worth a try
