The photos of lots of babies are not family photos, but collectable piccies - cartes-de-visite photographs were very popular throughout the Victorian period and as well as the usual family snaps, you could buy collectable ones (a bit like bubble-gum or cigarette cards in the 20th century) of people like the Royal family, actors and actresses, famous paintings, and whimsical ones of pretty girls and flowers, people (usually pretty girls, again

) in national dress, saucy ones of ladies showing their ankles, etc.
Doesn't really help you at all, but it's useful to know these things!
