HI again,

THis question has probably already been asked and i may have missed an answer somewhere along the way ....

Was wondering if anyone knew when the census' in Lancashire were taken. I have heard they were taken in different months (is that correct??) So this may explain a slight variation in ages??

Being a stickler for details an exact date or very close by anyway would be much appreciated, if not then a simple month will do.

To anyone answering, thanks very much in advance!!

There is also evidence that in the very earliest census the enumerators were under instructions as to how they should show the ages of the persons they recorded

Directions to Enumerators.
For infants under one year of age, state the number of months.
>From one year to 15 state the age on the last birthday.
For persons 15 years and upwards, write as follows, instead of the exact
age.
For persons between the ages of --->
15 and 20 write 15
20   "   25   "     20
25   "   30   "     25
30   "   35   "     30
35   "   40   "     35
40   "   45   "     40
45   "   50   "     45
50   "   55   "     50
55   "   60   "     55
60   "   65   "     60
65   "   70   "     65
70   "   75   "     70
No instructions for those over 75 but I imagine it follows the same
procedure.

The general consenus is that these directions were only used in the earliet collections as the later census collections sought more information.

In addition you must remember to add in the human factor .... many of us still tell porkies about our age  ;)
