Conquer Family
« on: Friday 22 September 06 11:33 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am researching this line of my family and wonder if anyone else is researching them.

My Conquers were in Barony Glasgow on 1851 and Newbattle Midlothian on 1841 and were mostly born Haddinton area.

I have found the marriage of Robert Douglas (b.abt 1813) to Jean/Jane Douglas in 1833 in Ormiston and have found their children but I can't find any parents.

There doesn't appear to be many Conquers in Scotland when I have searched so I don't expect many replies (if any).

Regards
Elaine

Hi Elaine

Where does the name Conquer fit in with your couple? Is it Jane's maiden name? Not clear from your post.

Also, to help people doing any searches for you, it would also help if you listed the names and birth years of the children you have for them. Also, you say that you have the family in 1841/51. The 1851 census would show ages/ birth places for Robert and Jane which might also help on the searches.

If they were still in Scotland, have you tried searching on Scotlands People for their death certs. which would include details of their parents' names?

Regards.

Monica

Hi Monica

:-[I'm sorry but it's Robert Conquer (not Douglas).  I will post the children and birthplaces tomorrow (I'm at work now).

I have got most of my info from Scotlands People, 1851 and LDS.

Thanks for letting me know that death certs include the parents names, I didn't realise.

Regards
Elaine

Hi Monica

Thanks for the Scottish Death Cert tip.  I've had a good search about on Scotlands People and found Roberts parents - Charles Conquer and Margaret Allan from Roberts death registration.

Still stuck with Jean/Jane Douglas parents though!

Regards
Elaine

Hi Elaine

You can search for married women's names by both married name and maiden name, which helps to filter out many entries.  There is only one entry I could see, but she is too young, a Jane Douglas/Con*er died 1879 age 53.

Two possibilities here:

1. She died between 1851-54, before official registration began in 1855 and there is no death cert for her on SP (have you checked the 1861 Census, this might show Robert as a widower).

2. If Robert died relatively young, she may have remarried and her death entry
might not show under Conquer.

Regards.

Monica

A couple of possible sisters for Robert:

1. MARY CONQUER  Christening: 02 APR 1808 Garvald, East Lothian, Scotland
2. ELISABETH CONQUOR Christening: 08 JAN 1815 Morham, East Lothian, Scotland

And parents' marriage:

CHARLES CONQUER  Marriages: Spouse:  MARGARET ALAN
Marriage:  21 MAY 1805  Garvald, East Lothian, Scotland

Does Robert's death cert show him as widower or does it still show him as married to Jane? Normally death certs a good indication on whether their wife/husbasband pre-deceased them.

Hi Monica

In 1855 Robert had married again to Elizabeth Forbes.  On his marriage registration he is down as widowed.

I haven't managed to find any children born to Robert and Jean after 1849  The last child I have is Jean Conquer (jnr)  she died age 5 and was buried in Glasgow High Church in 1853.  Unfortunatley can't find her death on Scotlands People.

Thanks
Elaine

Thanks Monica - I managed to find sisters Mary and Elisabeth and their parents marriage.

I also have found another very possible brother William b 1806 Garvald.

I haven't managed to find anything else for Charles Conquer and Margaret Allan.

There's nothing on IGI for father Charles is there. Nothing also on the 1841 Census for his age band. One possibility though on 1841 for Margaret:

CONQUER    Margaret 60 Ag. Lab b. Outside Census County
Address: Garvald Mains, Garvald & Bara-East Lothian

Nothing on SP for deaths of a Margaret Allan/Conquer post 1855 though, so she had probably died before this. If this is Robert's mother, it might be worthwhile you searching for her in the 1851 Census. If she was still alive, it would give you some clues in respect of a more accurate age/ birth place.

You were fortunate to find death details for the daughter Jean. You won't find any death info on SP prior to official registration in 1855.

Regards.
