On the same page of the 1841 Census, there's a James HODDER (age 25, born in County) and his wife Sarah (age 25, not born in County).  I think this must be Joshua's brother, because on the IGI, there is

A James HODDER was christened
on 20 June 1813, Uplyme, Devon
Parents: Thomas HODDER & Mary HODDER

and

A James HODDER married
a Sarah HORE
on the 23 May 1839, in Uplyme, Devon

Mobo,
thanks I've just worked out the code numbers on ScRoppers post and have found that entry on the 1841 census but it has them both with an age of 25 which would make Joshua birth year of 1816 (not 1811) and Sarah's 1816 and not 1809. Am I wrong to think that that type of discrepancy is too great?

Mobo,
the Joshua and Sarah on IGI do not have the same birth dates as on all the UK census records 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and their children on IGI do not match those on the 1851 UK census.
So I think we are looking at the wrong ones here.

I've just looked at the 1851 Census and would you believe it ! there are actually 2 Joshua HODDERS, of similar ages with a wife called Sarah.  There's yours, born 1811 in Whitchurch and living in Charmouth, and there's the other one I've been researching, b. 1816 in Uplyme, living in Uplyme.  So.......... if you're absolutely positive that your Joshua is the one born in Whitchurch, then we can forget the other family.

Any hints, tips or suggestions as to what I do or where I go from here?
Other than have a lie down!

Here they are, I think - Joshua was wrongly spelt, and this could be a first wife.

Mobo,
thanks for taking so much of your time with this.
The jasua hodder in the 1841 census at age 25 still does not tie up with all the subsequent census records that show a birth date of 1811.

Got to sort the kids out now so will try again later this evening
