Unusual Christian name.
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 02:03 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know the origin of this Christian name please..

Ferinda.

The family have deep Suffolk /Norfolk roots.... my grandmother was the first where it was used as a second name, then my mum, and then a cousin.

I haven't come across the name at all otherwise.
My grandfather was a mariner so maybe it is foreign in origin...but I can't find out where.

I have tried to find something out about it, but it isn't listed on any of the baby name sites (some do list quite unusual names) However, it does seem to crop up in search results as a surname. My grandfather and his father both had their mothers' maiden names as middle names, and my youngest son has my grandmothers maiden name as a first name (that is actually a forename) maybe it came into use in that way.

OWENS - Yorkshire (West Riding) and Ireland
PUGH - Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Nottinghamshire

Thanks for taking an in interest.

I know it's not any of the generations back mothers maiden names.

Think it's got to be something to do with him being a Mariner, and was close with someone  of that name but still didn't find it on any of the foreign sites.

But thanks for the suggestion of a surname...I was looking for a Christian name.

If you google search the name Ferinda, you get lots of pages in Italian.

Still don't know what it means mind you  ;)  but maybe it came from Italy?
