Ideas above her station?
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 13:59 BST (UK) »
I thought my g.grandfather was bad enough to reseach,
with changing his name on census + marriages.
(probably due to the fact his mother who had four children
never wed)
but his sister Kate seems to have gone one better!
Happy to be K.Ellis in 1881 cens.
has a son in 1884(unwed) registers him as George st.clair
Ellis.
weds in 1888 and now becomes" Kate V.st.clair Evans"
Evans I can deal with, g.grandads 2nd christian name
-Evan, another sister Eva,which leads me to think that it
was their unfound fathers surname.
I know her husband +his family seemed to be "a class
above" is that why she added the "st.clair"
Was her husband the father of Geo.st.cl? has his surname
Wilkinson + stated as son in the 1891 cens.
Where on earth does this "st.clair"come from?
I've even checked name for patron st.of tailors! the
Ellis's occupation.
          Oh,they did tell some porkies!

Jackie, I think it's nice that she wanted to 'big up' her family - maybe she was just trying to give them a good start in life and this was one of her means.

My Nana used to tell me off when I said my family name 'Patrick'

She would say 'it's not Patrick - it's Paytrick'

Now, she really would have given Mrs Bucket a run for her money  ;)

Thankyou both Bodger +Wheeldon for taking interest in
my posting.

Re.Sinclair.That thought crossed my mind too at first, after
only seeing the name on census +West Mid B.M.D.
but it was written st.clair when I looked at the actual
parish register book for Kates marriage.
