Hendon Park Cemetery
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My father has found a card detailing the burial place of his grandfather. It says;

Hendon Park Cemetery, Mill Hill, N.W.7  Christopher St.John Wright, no. of grave 49025. G.4.  The reverse side of this certificate says the cemetery is situated within about 200 yards of Mill Hill East Station, on the L.N.E.Railway and is 12 minutes' walk from Finchley, - Church End Station, L.N.E.Railway.

Originally I was going to ask "is this in Mill Hill or Hendon' but having looked on multimap I can see exactly where it is. So I guess the only, really cheeky, question left is ; "does anyone ever go to this cemetery and would they like to hunt for a grave for me ...... " ?!? I don't even know when he died (although probably 1920's or 30's) so it would be really useful if someone happened to be passing by .....?

Also, as a general point, if you have the grave number how easy is it to find them does anyone know? All I've ever done before it wandered around aimlessly till I've found (or not found) someone.

Hi Stephen

Quite easy if you can find a map ................... is this the correct cemetery ???

Once the correct section (G4) is located, you should find that most of the stones have the grave reference number engraved on them (often at the bottom of the rear of the stone) so you can follow them in numercial order to locate the correct space (and stone if it survives).

The records for many cemeteries are with the borough councils who should have

a) burial book giving burial details
b) grave book detailing all persons buried in each plot
c) (possibly) grave purchase register showing who purchased the plot and when etc..

They would also have maps of the area but some of them do now charge for information - it depends on the particular cemetery.

Hi Casalguidi ,

No, I don't think so. Hendon Cemetery is about a mile to the south east of Mill Hill Cemetery.

But thanks for the tips and locating etc. - it will help if I ever make the trip myself, which I probably will if no one else happens to be passing. It's a long trip from Yorkshire though !

Cheers

That's the one I was thinking of  - it looks about 200yds from Mill Hill East Station, which fits in with the card.

Cheers.

In the meantime, do contact them at the cemetery.  As you have the grave number, they should be able to tell you exactly who is buried in the grave, when they were buried and if a headstone stands.

Good luck and do let us know how you get on

They supplied copious information, namely;

Date of burial (they didn't record date of death in those days)
Age at death.
Place of death.
Vicar who conducted service.
Name of the funeral directors.
The fact that there is no gravestone.

Hard to ask for more really !

Many thanks for the tip !
